#pdxnotpop began its life as my thesis project for a BFA in communication design at PNCA. It is, and will continue to be, much more than that. As an introduction to the thesis, and the thinking behind my thesis, I reproduce the abstract here. Jesus. That sounds a little academic, but…
#pdxnotpop is – on the surface – a solution to a problem I have been faced with too often: How do you connect to the underground music scene? This, I admit, is not the most pressing social question.
However, behind this question – of interest to only a tiny niche community – lies much larger issues. The traditional media structures are crumbling, if you haven’t noticed. The social web has given anyone access to everyone, for free. This is quite literally revolutionary. So #pdxnotpop is a practicum in this new media model; #pdxnotpop is a hash-tag, a webpage, a presence on Twitter, Facebook, etc. #pdxnotpop is a network, and a brand identity. Most importantly, #pdxnotpop is a lesson in starting, and continuing, a conversation.
#pdxnotpop has solved its superficial goal for me; I now am plugged in to Portland’s vibrant underground music scene. But #pdxnotpop will continue, both to serve the community that I have come to love and to further explore the possibilities inherent in this new era.
